Guess I'll let the external LPF do the work and not add an internal LPF
on the receive side. Should be very easy mod, but I'll leave the radio
as original as possible.

Déjà vu.
I ran into the exact issue back in '92 when I purchased my Omni Six. I
used
a Nye Viking low-pass TVI filter to eliminate everything received above
30
MHz.
I traced my source of interference to a couple local TV and FM broadcast
transmitters. Not sure why the front end was susceptible to
strong-signal
VHF, but an internal LPF right at the front of the Rx would have been a
welcome addition.
