Because the batteries you buy are nothing like the ones I buy, even if
they have the same brand name. The good ones are made in Singapore
"under license" and may actually last 2 or 3 years before they leak.
The bad ones are made in the PRC or other countries in the area, and
while they look like the good ones, they are fakes. They may only last
6 months before they leak, and it takes 3-4 months from when they come
out of the machine until they end up in my hand.

Three months ago, I put new fresh batteries in a remote control I
rarely use, yesterday I had to pry them out and scrape out the
corrosion. It may be annoying on a $20 remote control (which you
probably could have bought for $10), it may be a problem with a $100
(including processor and RAM) motherboard, but you can imagine if it
had been a $5,000+ radio.

Ten-Tec decided that it was better to use a high quality battery which
can only be purchased as a high quality battery is a lot safer than
using a coin cell that can be replaced with something that will
destroy the radio. The last thing they want is a bunch of radios
coming back 5 years later with corrosion damaged control boards
because the old cells died and people replaced them with Wally-World
Chinese junk.
