Perhaps I should have qualified my statement a little. The logging software
I use sends the "request data" signal to the Paragon when you start entering
a call, and the radio responds with all the frequency and mode info whether
using a Geihl Chip or the original Ten Tec chip. However, if you try to set
the radio frequency from the logging program, the radio will not correctly
respond with the Geihl chip because of the way the Geihl uses band stacking
registers. On the TT version, frequency can be entered by entering the
digits from the keypad or remotely, followed by the ENTER key, but with the
Geihl, each press of a digit on the keypad or remotely will just change to
that band unless the string is preceded by the ENTER key first. My Yaesu
FT-857 in the car uses the same logic to enter a frequency from the remote
keypad as well.
The first time that happened it sure surprised me, but I quickly got used to
avoiding the instant spot function from the log, and the convenience of the
band stacking registers far outweighed the ability to spot in my operation.
I'll bet someone will be willing to sell you an original chip, or perhaps
you can get the N4PY chip and convert to the Icom command set. That should
give you the best of both worlds.

The tricky part of this , is I've never found a setting on any of the
logging
software I've
tried, that has a setting for "Paragon with Geihl Chip". Clicking on a
frequency spot, for
example, in my Geihl chip enabled Paragon results in some unexpected action
that I can't recall
right now, but which is NOT jumping to the new frequency/band. I'd really
like
to find an
original Paragon chip (not available from TT).
