And don't forget the heat sink on the power supply !! Particularly on a supply that you might be pushing pretty hard to put out 100 watts.

What I do in contests - and only on RTTY - is I turn on my amp. I use the rig only as an exciter and run it at maybe 20 watts output - loafing.

My Amp has about 10 x gain (linearly measured) so I then get about 200 watts out. That is loafing for the amp.

200 watts is enough more than 50 watts that I have found it to be a useful power increase.

I would think you could run 100 watts in a contest WITH THE TENTEC FAN MOD
( $49 USD ) ON THE HEAT SINK! Another option would be a computer fan behind
the rig and one behind the power supply on some kind of rubber pad to keep
the noise down blowing onto the heat sinks! Ah, the smell of hot
transformers in the MORNING!

Bob

For 100% duty cycle, run no more than 50 watts, unless you have good
ventilation.

Quoting Bob Towers <mm0rkt@gmx.com>:

I run a lot of digital modes and normally keep the power below 50 watts.
Just occasionally - ie in contests - I need a little more power,
especially using RTTY.

What's the maximum power I could run using RTTY and, say MFSK, which - I
think - is a 100% duty mode?
