To add a bit to the lore, in the USMC (I was a communication officer
there, once, a long time ago) we learned the nomenclature as "WD-1/tt."
Spoken, this was "W-D-one slash t-t," which eventually got shortened to
"slash wire." "Slash wire" became very useful for everything from
landline communications, to holding up field tents, to doing duty as a
clothesline, to securing loads on everything from amphibious ships to
helicopters. I would agree that "slash wire" would be great for
beverages -- it was great for everything else...
