In talking with Carl, VP8/G4VFU/mm this morning on 75 SSB, he mentioned a
three year assignment in the region. He says he will be spending time on
South Sandwich periodically during Dec/Jan/Feb later this year and will
definitely be getting on the air with a land-based station.
This is GREAT news! Carl also says he LOVES the low-bands, especially 160M,
some 80M and a little 40M. (That is even BETTER news.) I asked about 160M
and he said he would have to figure out how to get an effective 160M antenna
up on Sandwich, but that he definitely will try this Winter.
He notes that the massive pile-ups he encountered on 160M from the Falklands
recently were very tough for him and he encourages spreading out when calling.
At the moment he is MM, travelling on ship around the region. Apparently he
will be doing both land-based operations at various spots for three years and
often MM as well. While the MM stuff is interesting, it is the only the land-
based operations that will count for DXCC.
Let's hope his plans jell for Sandwich this Winter.
