Hello Fan, Hello all fellow topbanders,

Allow me to react to your e-mail concerning cross-band 160m QSO's.

You can have a very strong signal on top band (any band) by several methods:

1/ using a very effective and efficient antenna, that produces "gain". Gain
mains directivity, and directivity means good listening properties. If you
obtain a BIG signal by using very good antennas, yo are bound to hear well
(unless you are in a very noisy QTH, which means lots of neigbours and you
run high power, lots of risks for interference in electronic systems)

2/ using EXCESSIVE power. I mean 10 or 20 KW or even more. This does not
help in receiving.

One station in particular has been known on 80 meters having such a signal,
"big mouth and no ears". We have all heard him making fictive QSO's, just to
tell the world he is not only loud. I remember vividly years ago, when he
was "working" a string fictive VK's on 80 m, and when Arie, VK2AVA suddenly
came on the frequency and said "I cannot hear any of the VK's you are
working..." That station now seems to play the same game on top band.

In my eyes such cross band QSO's are worthless and a source of QRM. I would
vividley encourge all fellow radio amateurs NOT to engage in such QSO's, for
obvious reasons.

What else are we going to invent? Do like some guys on 50 MHz and go on the
DX cluster and tell the station at the other end of the world "I am on such
and such frequency and now calling you... Are you hearing me???...."... Why
not simply make the QSO over the phone? There would be less QRM, and the QSO
made that way would be just as valid..

Let me wich you all a happy 2002, and a lot of good TWO-WAY DX QSO's on top
band!

73

John, ON4UN
