I think the key question here is "what are you trying to
accomplish?"
I use an inverted V on 160 from near San Francisco,
and I routinely work stations all over the area
West of the Rockies. For me, from
a bang for the buck (and time) perspective,
my V is fine (apex at ~65').
On the other hand, if you want to work DX,
play in the 160 contests in a competitive way,
etc. - then I believe that some kind of
(even short) vertical is a better bet.
