I used the inverted U for many years. Mine went up 60 feet or so, went
horizontal for about 100 feet & down 60 feet. It had a ground radial
system at each end. The far end was grounded and the near end was fed
with an inductor in series with a 1000 pfd vacuum variable to ground. It
worked very well on transmit and was resonant on 1830 kHz as well as on
80 CW. The two ground systems were connected with a horizontal wire on
the ground.
This antenna was first described in the "Minooka Special " article in
QST in the 1970's by W9UCW. It was attributed to K8RRH in the article.
K4TEA has used it with great success since the 1980's as he is way up in
160 DXCC totals.
