Henk,

I use the 26m Spiderbeam pole for almost 6 years, and it survived every
storm until now (in an exposed area).? As far I can say the quality of
pole, wires (they are basically the same on the 18m pole) and ropes etc
is very good.

Yes, almost "only" wire, but it ads up for kevlar ropes, monofil lines,
radial plate etc... and shipping costs from different suppliers.

IMHO for permanent installation: No need to be stingy!

 Hi,

I am looking for experiences with the toploaded vertical with a 18m
 Spiderbeam pole.

As described on the Spiderbeam website:

<<https://www.spiderbeam.com/product_info.php?info=p338_160m%20Wire%20Vertical%20kit%20for%2018m%20fiberglass%20pole.html&XTCsid=4a1073266aff30fbb590fe50e3bd792a>>

I have erected a 18m pole for use as 80m vertical. Looking if I can
change that to 160m as well.

I see a lot of swing of the top of the pole. Just wondering if the
CQ-534 is strong enough to keep the antenna straight during heavy wind.

Hi Dave,

There were several speed demons who were shooting themselves in the
foot with endless high speed CQs. Why would anyone send hundreds
-- even thousands -- of unanswered high speed CQs on topband when
slowing their speed to 26-30 WPM (or even lower) will only improve
their topband results?

They did not slow down for the vast majority of callers were at
30 WPM or lower. Its a mindless approach to contesting...

Even us little pistols can have loads of fun. I managed to work 41 DX stns with
35 countries. Seventeen stns were in EU & 17 in the Carib. Rest in Cent. Am.
and KH6. I was hearing strong EU stns just before our sunset, but my first EU
QSO
was around 0100Z on Fri and 0Z on Sat night. The strongest EU sigs were in the
S-7/S-8 range and Carib stns mostly a true 59+. KH7M & KH6/N6DA both bumping
S9 plus at times. My last log entry was LY7Z at 2351Z Sun night. Not being in
the
contest, I just hunted and pounced on the strongest sigs. Got some, missed some.
I was using a TS-440S, 100W, a run-of-the-mill Inv. L. I heard no bad ops...all
were
courteous and no big pileups. As noted, there were a few speed demons, but some
careful listening got them figured out. One op, may have been S50C, worked with
me over a minute to get me in his log. All gave me a good chance to get thru.
Fun!

It's us little pistols who make up a good deal of your scores I expect. Not
that I'm such a little one but this season I have not even been able to get my
inv 'L to work right. Put in power and SWR goes thru the roof????? Go Figure.
Planning on seting up a K2AV FCP but it won't be by next weekend and my
favorite 160 contest....160CQSSB. Been lazy this winter I guess.

Hi guy?s,

Right, we must adapt the cw speed to the Band conditions.

Personnaly, I was at a speed of 26, and sometimes activing my bencher key...
Faster, around 36, is a non sense on top band.

Coupla things. I need new Dacron, some I
have is from the 80's & finally at its
end. I bought some replacement but it's
not what I had. What I had was greenish
and solid braid, tough and incredibly
resistant to nature.

What my new "Dacron" is, is a white center
conductor I assume is Dacron, with a black
braided sleeve/outer-layer which slides
over the center conductor. It's OK but
difficult to work with and certainly not
what I am going to keep using. I contacted
one source who said he sells pure Dacron
rope but never buying from him before,
asked for a photo of an end piece so I
could see if it's what I'm looking for. He
never sent it to me so I'm still looking.

For the moment I need 500', soon, double
that. If there's a known source for the
good stuff in the states, please let me
know.

Now the Rodents, vermin, beasts; I don't
know what it was, but I've been plagued
with wildly varying SWR/antenna problems
often getting a SWR of 9 and then later
the normal SWR of 1.2. I'd get varying SWR
that was fine till say 30W and then the
LP-100A would jump to 9. I'd go out, check
things and find nothing wrong. It's been
driving me nuts. Intermittents suck. I
finally found the little miseries had been
chewing on the ferrite choke on the
control wires to the remote band-switch.
Amazing they only went for the 90 degree
bends, I'm sure they'll go for the
straight length again (did that once 6-7
years back). I have a Green Heron remote
with wireless transmitter ready to go out,
I'll do that in better weather.

Removed the rodent's teething ring &
reattached the wires to the remote box and
all's well, just some touch-up stuff to do
and prepare to put up an 80 sloper. The
tree above the radial plate is rotted, it
holds the current 80 vertical wire and
looks to come down soon, probably on the
plate or remote band-switch. But other
than that, I'm back on the air. Sure
delayed me getting into the contest on
Friday, but still knocked out 62 Q's & 37
countries on 160. Couldn't do much on
Saturday but t'was still fun.

Thanks for any thoughts on the Dacron.

Gary

?There is a company that sells aircraft parts and supplies. The name is something like
"American Spruce" or some such. Memory is unreliable on this.

They sell spark-plug shaped silica gel de humidifier devices used in preserving
piston engines and also used in early Collins PTO's.

Some creative searching will turn up the company name.

I think they might mean 1000, as in resistor or cap values now... 1R5.
4R7. Just a guess.

1000 has always been K or KW.? I have seen ATT for 100 and nn for 99.?
Never heard ARK.

 4R7. Just a guess.

You may be correct.? Since two stations both used it and to make sure I was
reading it correctly, I turned on the K3 decoder and that's what it came up with
too.? Maybe we should just log what is received and not use a magic decoder ring
to figure it out.

aircraftspruce.com (but airplane stuff is $$$$$)

If it is really dacron then http://synthetictextilesinc.com/supportham.html

And available at several ham radio suppliers.

Maybe you want nylon based, this ebay seller has high quality
"para-cord" also called "550 line" I suspect originally mil-spec as
parachute riser lines, pretty important. I have bought from others but
the sheath was loose on the core. This may not affect the strength,
don't know, but it sure makes for messy cutting, heat sealing and poor
handling.

Also, red based colors while highly visible fade very quickly in sun.
The herringbone patterns even in blues and greens are still highly
visible, if that is desired.

They sell spark-plug shaped silica gel de humidifier devices used in

Some creative searching will turn up the company name.

What my new "Dacron" is, is a white center
conductor I assume is Dacron, with a black
 braided sleeve/outer-layer which slides
over the center conductor. It's OK but
difficult to work with and certainly not
what I am going to keep using. I contacted
one source who said he sells pure Dacron
rope but never buying from him before,
asked for a photo of an end piece so I
could see if it's what I'm looking for. He
never sent it to me so I'm still looking.

For the moment I need 500', soon, double
that. If there's a known source for the
good stuff in the states, please let me
 know.

I keep seeing references to people using symmetrical wire top loading
instead of the single wire of an inverted L.? My question is how to
calculate the appropriate length for the two top-loading wires.
