Another suggestion for the bow and arrow crowd:
Go to a sporting goods or fishing store. They have bow fishing
outfits or attachments which involve an open reel and some pretty
strong twine. I was able to find a bow fishing arrow which did not
have any point on it and I found that an old screw-on bnc connector
made a decently weighted tip which bounces nicely when it hits the
trunk of a tree (Of course I could not hit any target if I tried!).
The local Goodwill store provided the bow for $3.00.

For a fishing reel, I'd recommend an inexpensive open face spinning reel
with 10 to 16 lbs test line. I gave up on the archery trick here and
now use a slingshot (abt $5) a one or two ounce sinker as the projectile
and attach the fishing line to the sinker. I'm fortunate enough to have
two old ice fishing rods (Haven't lived in Alabama all my life) which
are great for this purpose. Have XYL or Kid hold ice fishing pole with
reel on it with bail of reel open, You shoot sinker over tree. Attach
heavier line to fishing line and reel it back over tree. 100 ft up no
problem. Only difficultly can be on a windy day as fishing line can blow
off course.
