Ed, as a former El Pasoan and also a former Floridian, I can tell you the
palm tree root systems are relatively extensive.  They are strong enough
to hold the palm trees in place during many hurricanes in Florida.  I would,
however, make sure the eye bolt is placed down very close to the ground
because palm trees do tend to sway bit in a strong wind.  In fact, when
the Franklin Mtn winds howled through my neighborhood (North East El Paso)
I've seen a 2x4 go parallel to the ground across my yard at about 10 feet
high and it just kept right on going!!!
