Actually, for centuries it was primarily the Church who objected to a (round)
earth rotating around the sun... Any such talk was considered heresy because
it would force the church to admit that previous papal decrees that the earth
was at the center of the universe were in error... I'm not aware of the
church's position on the roundness or flatness of the earth as a separate
issue during those centuries...

But, every ships captain and navigator (usually one and the same) understood
that the earth was round, else celestial navigation would not work whereas it
did work... Now (to get back to tower talk) they knew that the circumference
of the earth was 24,902.6 miles (roughly)... And they understood that two
ships sighting each others masts at a distance leaned away from each other by
the amount of 0.0144563 degrees per mile... So, when your buddy who lives ten
miles from you puts up his tower, be aware that his tower leans away from your
perfectly true tower by 0.14 degrees...
