David,
Good topic with longevity too #!:?} Some random
comments.
1. Construction quality and rough weather
survivability.
*(Always a factor).
2. SWR within the desired bands.
* (10 through 30 Log Periodics operate on all
frequencies from 10 through 30 meters), not like
monobanders, Tribanders. LP's have a typical
highest VSWR about 2:1 across the entire band!).
4. F/B, F/S ratios ... can make all the
difference when QRM threatens
a QSO.
* (Any is better than none, but the yagi
displays the best F to B and F to S signal to
noise ratio).
5. Gain -- using essentially identical criteria
(looking for differences
over 2dB as significant).
*(The gain of 3 dB will double your power out &
make a discernible increase in hearing, that is
defined as a noticeable change in audio).
Ah, the bigger the better. Axiom her in
Michigan: If your wire antenna's didn't come
down last winter, they weren't big enough hi hi.
