Apparently I know what I'm doing - the county inspector was here this
morning and left me a final approval tag for the tower. On Friday of last
week I'd finished the last section at 64 feet and installed the middle
bearing shelf. This one will hold only a u-bolt and angle iron clamp to
steady the mast for rotator maintenance. I still have to drill the top
bearing plate and the bottom rotator plate, prep the CM mast, build the
antennas .... BTW, the heavy angles to which the plates are bolted make
excellent work platforms. Very comfortable standing on them while working
on the top section of tower, unlike standing on the steeply-sloping braces
elsewhere on the structure.
The grounding system and conduit are in and grass is growing again over
the filled-in trenches. I'm awaiting delivery of two Hoffman boxes for
either end of the conduit run (at the tower and at the shack.) Then I can
pre-install the coax runs in the conduit, awaiting final installation of the
mast and antennas. This will probably occur later this month.
As I told someone else on the list, the view from my tower top is -
BORING! Nothing but trees. I thought I'd be able to see K6IR's KT-34XA
from my tower (he lives up the hill from me), but all I can see is the 2M
vertical atop his mast. At least I'm up above the trees in my immediate
vicinity.
With the installation of the last two sections, the tower has become
clearly visible throughout the neighborhood. Most inquiries have been out
of curiosity - no hostility (yet). Our neighborhood picnic is Saturday -
should be interesting.
Lately I've been making inquiries here about loading the tower on 80 or
160. Once the Skyhawk and D40 have been installed I'll give both bands a
try and let yous know.
Next update will be after the antennas have been installed and warmed
up.
