I recently compared a 520 ft Beverage on 75m
to a 4 element vertical receive array. The
vertical array was a rectangular end fire/
broadside arrangement of dimensions 1/4 wl
by 1/2 wl (65 feet by 130 ft). Listening
to long path signals from Europe, the two
antennas were virtually indistinguishable.
Subsequently, I tried an 8 element receive
array 1/8 wl by 1 7/8 wl and observed about
6 dB gain in S/N over the Beverage. The
receive arrays also work on 160 with reduced
gain. However, the Beverage also has reduced
gain on 160, so it still loses. I'm planning
on phasing out the Beverages as I get vertical
arrays up and running.
Since you obviously have the space for vertical
arrays, I don't know why you would want to use
loop class antennas.
