Yes, I have this sort of a "mounting" scheme, and it's worked fine for some 
years 
now.  I've used a couple of big nylon tie-wraps to hold the plate in place so 
it doesn't 
flop around.  When the tower is vertical, gravity seems to be a satisfactory 
method of 
holding the plate.
