[TowerTalk] Side Mount of Vertical Antennas - distance from towerface

All,

   I need to mount some VHF vertical antennas on the side
of the tower using standoff arms.   I can not for the life
of me remember the rule of thumb for distance from side of
tower for an omni or minimally distorted pattern.  Is it
 1/2 wavelength ?  3/8 wavelength ?   

   Are their distances to be avoided such as 1/4 or odd
multiples of 1/4 wavelength ?
