This document contains the "proof" for the formula that I listed. It is an 
excellent reference for anyone who wants to know about losses in their 
vertical antenna radial field. It should give you some confidence about the 
formula. The formula is quite simple (as I posted earlier), but the work 
behind it is extremely thorough.
