Your comment inspired me to look for 'peak wind speed'
in the archives and I found this interesting thread
which includes a couple interesting links:

I found a mph recommendation for each county in the US
on the championradio web site which I believe is given
in '3 second gust' terms.  I found that the Tashjian
specs reference the new peak or gust spec.  I see
there are several classifications:  '3 second gust
speed', 'fastest mile', '10-min avg' and 'hourly mean'
and one of the links in the above thread has a
conversion table for all 4.  I'll contact US Tower and
see which one of the above they use and I should have
the info I need.
