Thanks again to the comments; Steve's idea of just putting up a US Tower
MA40 and a 3 element SteppIR sure sounds good, of course HRO says the
shipping on the MA40 will be way up there but if you are buying a SteppIR
antenna, what's money....Hi I am beginning to think that I will need to
spend a couple of hundred dollars and have a real estate attorney look at
our covenants; there is not a single mention prohibiting antennas and
besides I have a canal and huge horse pastures behind my place. But like one
thread mentioned, it may not stop a person from filing a suit anyway.
A special thanks to Jim Brown for his comments. I have had my Force 12 40XK
vertical dipole up for several years without giving much thought to
direction for nulls. Time to break out the compass and see where it is
pointed; my guess is closer to east/west. Your comments about low profile
are well taken Jim and it seems like you have a good deal of experience with
fan dipoles from trees. I think that I will start constructing a two-band
fan dipole this weekend for 30 and 20 meters cut to the CW portion of the
band. One end will probably be much higher than the end closer to the house.
The high end will be in the trees; I would probably construct an anchor pole
for the house end, and probably not support the center initially. It will
take a little time to get either a fiberglass or metal pole for supporting
the center/coax feed. I think the fan dipole might have room to share the
backyard space without too much interaction. Thanks again for the advice Jim
and I enjoy the articles you have posted on your site.
In terms of HOA situations, I wonder if in Montana it might be better to ask
for forgiveness rather than ask for permission. There have not been any
controversial issues around here to my knowledge; I will need to check with
some of the hams locally. One of the off-line responses suggested that I
approach the antenna issue by first asking what facets of ham radio that I
spend most of my time on. For now that is cw and a combination of DX and
ragchewing. The rag chewing part does not require me to make any changes,
but the DX part (even with improving SFI numbers) would indicate a
directional (gain) antenna. I was suprised that none of the responses had
anything to say regarding the hexbeam and pushpole approach. It should be an
interesting spring in terms of antenna experimenting. 73s Rip W7RIP
