Hans and some of the well meaning responders:

 

I think you are WAY overthinking this. 

 

I have several all-wire 4-squares here for 20-40-80 and a 2el wire array for
160m (ran out of room for a 4-square, hi)

Because of the physical constraints of my land all arrays have only 2 raised
radials per vertical. They are only at 90* to one another, not 180* like one
would think. (perhaps this orientation method is unique). I would've liked 4
or 8 radials, but simply no room !

 

My measuring method however is not unique..I read it here on Towertalk.  I
simply made a dipole, installed it at around 4-5' agl and tuned it by
shortening the radials until I got at the frequency I was aiming for using
my antenna analyzer.

 

I believe I started using the formula 246/f(Mhz) and it was very close. A
little math and usually one more trim did it....I used 234/f(Mhz) for the
vertical element - almost no trimming needed either.  By the time I was onto
my 3rd array I was only removing an inch or two of wire this was all so
predictable.

 

What could be simpler?
