Connect them in series with no load present. You never cross these
terminals or allow them to reach ground. Very simple and safe. There should
be no worries working with these batteries if you don't add a load while
doing your interconnections.
Connecting the radios to the batteries I use a Power Pole Distribution box,
very simple and safe. Not to mention convenient and fast to
disconnect/connect. Each port on the panel is fused along with the input
to the entire box. I use 45A Power Pole connectors and good low loss cable
of #10 or larger.
These batteries are like any other and simple safety techniques when
working with them are all that's requires. its not like your working on a
35KV supply to a Russian Radar system which is a bit more intense. Yet
simple safety precautions kept me alive all these years.
I think the best rule for working with High Voltage Electricity was that
made by Nikola Tesla himself when he said keep one hand in your back pocket
to prevent stopping your heart when measuring HV in any cabinet. If you do
come into contact the path will likely be thru your arm to ground, not
across your chest.
But in this instance just making the series contact between two high
capacity batteries should be painless if done correctly.
