I also am thinking it is not a S/W problem, unless someone could logically
explain otherwise.
Perhaps RFI or Ground Loop?
In these cases, I am sure nobody 'hot plugged' devices with either the
computer or a peripheral running, only a caution not to, for those that
might think it is safe do so.
What ever the cause, I am sorry to read about your dilemmas.
Let us know if you solve the mystery.
