Barry,
Many of the low end Audigy sound cards have only a single
input shared between mic and Line. If you go back to the
Audigy, make sure it is set for LINE ... otherwise you will
overdrive the mic input and cause the symptoms you describe.
I have suggested that the Audigy 2 is the "minimum acceptable"
current Creative card for most applications today (Writelog,
N1MM Logger, microHAM microKEYER, etc.) because of the separate
microphone and Stereo Line input.
Warning to all considering a new sound card ... be sure to
confirm that the sound card you choose has separate mic and
line inputs and that both will function independently. If
not, you will have an issue in reconfiguring between digital
and voice operation. In addition, you will not be able to
record voice macros "on the fly" if you are recording a voice
contest.
