I've received several requests for additional information
on the
Inrad roofing filter kit for the '1000D, so decided to
pass along
my observations.
1. Kit isn't that hard to install. Inrad does as they have
done
in other cases and uses double sided tape to attach a pc
board
to the chassis.
2. It may help to put a little contact cleaner on the
connectors, mine
had a small problem with a little dirt.
3. No alignment really needed. You can set up the I.F.
gain and
squelch pot levels if you want.
4. The passband of the filter will be between 4 and 5KHz.
That's the
closest they can get it at this high a frequency. Mine
sounds more
towards 4KHz. This makes the bandwidth between the two
receivers
very apparent. AM reception is limited to about 2KHz
bandwidth on the
main receiver. Just fine for Amateur use. A little
restricted for
Shortwave or broadcast use.
5. The filter has no affect on Xmit or second receiver
audio because
of where it is placed.
6. The noise blanker gain needs turned up more, but also
does a much
better job.
7. The best example of performance improvement is to tell
you about is a
net I like to check into on 3970KHz. There's a station,
running legal
limit into a directional array on 3967.5KHz that's S9+60.
With the
roofing filter, and using the 1.8KHz I.F. filters, he's
gone.
