Most of you are right. A good roofing filter will help a well designed
receiver. There are
a few issues to consider:
1. The radio's frequency reference better be just about right on. There's
not much room
for error with a 4 KHz wide filter that operates around 70MHz.
2. The filter needs to meet some tight tolerances to be centered on the
bandpass.
3. Expect the main receiver to 'sound' a little different, the noise
blanker to work different.
4. Use very short ground wires. Long ones cause leakage.
5. No, the receiver did not loose gain, background noise is lower.
6. Yes, the filter does help, but mostly is severe conditions. Do the
math. If you are working a faint
DX station next to somebody pounding in at 40db over S9, chances you will
still hear him. It's not
the receiver's fault. The average Amateur transmitter only has
intermodulation products around
30db down. His buckshot will still be 10db over S9. You will think the
chap is wide. Then there's
that Ham that turns the processor all the way up. Now the mixing products
are only 10DB down.
So if some garbage sill leaks by, don't blame the receiver. Es 73. de Dave
