It takes the antenna tuner out of the signal path.....

You have to start with an antenna that is within the limits of what the 
tuner will tune.

If you get the SWR indication the tuner can't reach resonance on the 
antenna.

You can go to an external manual tuner that has a wider range of tuning 
ability.
