Alex,
I would first remove all the vacumn tubes, circuit boards, and connectors and 
clean them very carefully with an appropriate compound.  I would then do the 
same for the rotary switches.
I suspect that over a quarter of a century would have resulted in oxidation 
build up, resulting in poor contact.  That could easily manifest itself as 
instability.
