Most steel wires will show more r-f loss than copper wires. If the loss is tolerable, go for it! Might be a little hard to work with it if it is stiff, etc. I prefer to use the Home Depot or Lowe's #

At the risk of being off base, Gary, on SSB the output will be zero until you talk into the mic. Just keying it won't test the rig or the mic. Sorry if this is obvious, but a lot of folks get caught
