- Surely a meter, ohm checking the pin resistance between the cathode and grid will identify the problem tube ? Unless the short only occurs when hot. Adrian Fewster vk4tux I'll swap in a different set

- 99% of the time a short wont show with a meter in a cold tube. On rare cases yes. Surely a meter, ohm checking the pin resistance between the cathode and grid will identify the problem tube ? Unless

- I was not thinking about checking the continuity in the tubes themselves when I balked at opening up the amp deep enough to check the continuity at the sockets! I didn't connect those dots initially

- Nichrome wire would have to dissipate 75 watts of heat unless it was mounted on stand-offs with air flow. Otherwise that heat will go directly to the socket thus quickening their demise as they lose
