I went to US Virgin Islands, St Croix for a combined vacation together with my
wife and contest operation. (Yes, it can be done!) Larry, KE2VB let me use his
equipment and the call WP2Z. THANKS Larry!
After 37 years of Amateur Radio but no serious contesting the last 20 years I
realized I had to learn a few new tricks like computer logging/keying,
transceiver interface etc. Tree supplied me the N6TR program which worked
perfectly (ver 6.01). It was really exciting to watch the top left corner how
the score developed and the importance of new mults. Not having to worry about
noting band changes was also a plus.
Operating from Windwood on top of the island St Croix was very different to
what I have experienced here in Europe and also in Africa as ZS6BNF, 7P8AH,
A2CNN and ZS6BNF/3D6. Except for static noise there was absolutely no man
made noise. The view from this QTH is fantastic all around and keeps your
spirits high during the contest.
Conditions were very good to Europe. Wherever I pointed the antenna and at
almost any time of the day there were Europeans coming through. There were
good openings to Japan on 20m in the early mornings. But where were the US
stations?
Equipment: FT-1000
Force 12 model C4 (10-40)
Sloper NE (80)
A tip: To eliminate the problems with noise from the switching power supply in
my Compaq Laptop I ran it on 12V and it was dead quiet.
