I am still trying to learn how to work a DX contest from Texas.
Conditions were surprising at times and disappointing at other times. I got
up early Friday and stayed busy all day so I didn't get a pre-contest nap.
As a result I had to get some sleep the first night (1030Z to 1230Z). But
after that I was able to go the remaining distance without a break. (OK,
maybe I fell asleep in the chair a few times on Sunday).
80M was OK to Europe the first night but the second night was terrible.
The only time I could run Europe was for a couple of hours both mornings on
15 meters. Other than that, it was S/P for almost all my European contacts.
But I felt I was doing well to Japan on all bands except 80 meters.
A big surprise was the 10 meter opening on Sunday. One of the first
stations I heard was YB1AQS on LP. That was unexpected. I heard FR5DX
working someone and tried to ask him to move off frequency for me. No luck,
but I heard him again a few minutes later high in the band making his
first(?) CQ and caught him then.
I may have gotten to 10M late since I was running on 15M a long while
before I thought to check 10M. The 10M opening started fading soon after I
got there.
I heard zone 2 only on 160M (VE2UA). And I missed zone 6 on 20 meters (how
did that happen?). I heard some good stuff on 40 meters that I couldn't
crack the pileup for (like A61AJ). It is hard for an old DXer like me to
leave a pileup for an interesting DX station. So there is still a lot to be
learned about contest discipline, even by an old contester like myself.
The CQWW CW is always a fun contest no matter what the conditions.
