Excuses: This year the Radio Oakley Contest Club was ready with the usual 5
stations, and all but one rotator working. Unfortunately the big flare at
0059Z on day 1 produced an A index of 21, so we struggled with ultra poor
propagation and noisy bands the first day. We had no EU or JA almost anywhere
the first day except for 40 and a little 80. Conditions improved rapidly on
the second day, with an unusually long 15m opening between 0400Z and 0620Z the
second day. Despite the flare, our score was nearly the same as last year with
much worse conditions. What would our score have been without the flare?
Like the SSB edition, we had some real competition too, this time from the
PVRC
team NJ4F, composed of K1SE, K4EC, K4EU, K4GMH, K4ZW, K7SV, NJ4F, WA4JUK and
Daisy. Their 6158917 point effort from Virginia nearly beat us.
Our experiment with Internet packet was a mixed success with RFI and the
vagaries of the local ISP preventing us from staying connected, so much of the
contest we did without. Next time we will put the modem inside a steel box!
The contest highlight was working Kenny, EA4/K2KW (in Madrid) just before the
start of the contest and then having him walk in the door at N6RO Sunday
afternoon so he could finish the contest with us.
We worked the following stations on all six bands:
AZ4F*
N5CQ*
and the following stations on five bands (missing):
FK8VHN (160)
HC1OT (160)
JH5ZJS (160)
K0IW* (160)
KH7R (160)
KN7Y* (160)
LT1F (160)
P49V (160)
VE3EJ (10)
VE7ZZZ (10)
WL7E (10)
WT2Q* (10)
*Well intended, no doubt, but clueless zero pointers.
At least next year the extra Qs will count! If the new rule providing 1 point
for in country QSOs had been in effect this year, our score would have been
7596956 points, an increase of 10.9%.
Thanks to Ken and Jean, who were in Spokane playing music, and look for us
next
Fall in the CQP.
