One must never forget that the object of this hobby, contesting in
particular, is to have fun. The three of us did just that! We approached
this one as an exercise to prepare us and the station for the upcoming
contest season.
I still had the 2nd radio S & P antenna sitting on the ground so the 2nd
radio was not that effective. Re-organized the shack for MS operation and
the changes including new switching hardware really worked well. Added
another computer and relegated my retro station to its own desk top
position. It was a mistake to not put up the 160 system as we apparently
lost some points on that band.
15 meters was amazing and tried to seduce us into staying on that band ----
wonder what a single band 15 could have done? We had surprisingly good
openings into Europe on 40 and 80, as we were running Eu. on 40, two hours
before sunset. 20 meters started very slow but it had times where the
world, and mults, were available. The openings into the Far east were very
good. 10 meters was frustration! Heard lots of mults from Europe that
could not hear us on any antenna.........guess it was a noise thing or
something.
We tried out WriteLog and were very happy with its flexibility. My goal is
to be able to enter calls via speech recognition software and this is a big
step toward that event. Really enjoyed having computers linked by a
Ethernet as this allowed the second op to make informed decisions about band
changes.
I do not like the 10 minute rule at all. This rule will lower MS
participation as it puts the added logistic burden on the op (who has the 10
minute timer) and it lowers scores for MS. What's wrong with the CQWW
format? Perhaps instead of this change the League should announce zero
points for QSO's made using "last two letters" theme of operation.
We had much QRM from the resident Sadie D Dachshund Dog on Sat. morning and
received a report of 599-28/BARK from one gentleman. If you own a
Dachshund, you understand.
Nothing broke and the changes made seemed to work well. My thanks to Art
N2AU and Mike KC2EAL for their participatory support. In Ithaca, NY ----
anxiously awaiting October.
