A blizzard wasnt going to screw my plans I told myself as I drove up I-93 from
Boston to NH with zero visibility on Friday. Sure I could have stayed at
College and enjoyed the three day weekend drinking like a Viking and partying
like it was 1999, but I was determined to Contest.I borrowed my roomates 'car'
a 1983 Oldsmobile Omega -it was literally a death trap. Both doors didn't open,
entry was via permenatly open windows only. If that wasn't bad enough when the
car goes below 50 it stalls! Anyway, after a long trip in a bad car during a
big storm I arrived at the superstation of KB1SO.
Thanks so much to KB1SO for letting me use his superb QTH to make a shot a
winning SOSB/20. I have a whole new respect for the single band entry now. It
is really really hard to stay focused with no band changes and few mults and
the ever lingering thought that 15 and 10 were smoking while I was confined to
the 'pit' known as 20m. This thought was confirmed by the lack of EU on 20
between 12-17z. everyone was on 15/10. My best hour was 19z on Saturday with
130 which was nothing really spectacular. I had great JA/Asia runs around 12z
on both days with some really spicy Asia mults booming in. 14.025.5 was my run
frequency for nearly 16 straight hours on Saturday, I also suspect 14025 is the
ITF-International Tuning Up Frequency. As expected and feared things got ultra
boring on Sunday, as I kept plowing through the endless droves of weak Russian
stations that were always calling. Whats the deal with those OK stations?..they
were well represented. KB1SO has a kicking station with 4/4 to EU and another
stack to SA on 20. His ICOM-776 was a big improvement over my normal rig the
ancient Yaseu FT-101ee. Overall, I had a blast and hope everybody had a good
time as well!
73!
