N2IC (/0) - ARRL DX CW Single-Op All Band
This year I started the contest thinking that I couldn't possibly beat last
years' results - approximately 3000 QSO's and 3.4M points. Conditions
seemed so good last year, I couldn't see how they could ever be better. I
intentionally avoided any pre-contest studying of last years log, fearing
that I would become increasingly demotivated as my cumulative score this
year fell behind.
Boy, was I wrong ! With longer 10 and 15 meter openings, great over-the-pole
nighttime openings on 20 for several hours after 15 closed, and hours of
runnable Europe and JA on 40, it was nearly 48 hours of run, run, run. On
both nights I did not make my first check of 80 until 0530Z, tearing myself
away from a hot 20 meter band because I just HAD to try to work some Europe
on 80 before they were in daylight. Only the last 4 hours of the contest
felt like a "normal" Colorado contest - long periods of S&P. It's hard to
believe that I broke what used-to-be the USA record from Colorado !
I really worked the 2nd radio hard, which seems almost impossible for me
when the rate is > 100/hour. Also aggressively moved multipliers (many
thanks to many of you for the QSY !).
