Wow, was that fun or what? Too bad conditions can?t be like this every year. I
am sure there are going to be some giant scores out there. Some of the
highlights that come to mind:
* Who would have thought that a 3 element 10M beam on 15? pushup mast tied to
the side of my son?s trampoline could lead to 700+ QSO?s on that band? On a
$/QSO basis this has got to be one of the top setups out there. (The antennas
on the other bands were: a wire LPA for 10-20 fixed on EU at 20? and a 40M
diople at 20?. I had no antennas for 80 or 160 though 6D2X tried talking me
into trying an 80M QSO on the 40M dipole and P40V was pleading for any Idaho
station to get on 160M.)
* Notable high QSO count countries on 10M: JA= 244, DL=69, I=65, G=26, VK=21,
ON=19
* Even with this great 10M performance I missed some usually easy countries:
BV, BY, ZS , 6Y, and FM where were you?
* Only had one frequency fight when a 2X1 in 2 land decided he wanted my 15M
frequency. On the plus side thanks to K9NS for standing by while I worked a FS
on 10M who was just 750Hz up from him.
* This is the first contest I have ever worked where I had more QSO?s into
Europe than Japan. My feeling this is partly from the great openings in EU but
also the general decline in the number of JA stations on the air.
* 10M caught me by surprise Saturday morning as it opened to EU about 1500Z.
The more usual opening is 1600-1630Z, which is what we had on Sunday. Though on
Sunday it seemed to stay open later.
* Being in a rare state sure made it fun. I imagine I got a little taste of
what rare DX gets. During the height of the EU openings it felt like I had 5
stations or more calling me at once for 60-90 minutes. My pileup training from
operating at NK7U sure paid off.
* Happy to give out many ?first Idaho QSO? to the deserving. I also gave F5TMJ
his last state for his all time WAS.
* Worked a bunch of new countries.
* Thanks to W5XD for making such a great WriteLog program. I had no problems
with Telnet PacketCluster access. At the beginning I did try recording the
contest to my hard disc but the process seemed to interfere with the voice
keyer memories and they would freeze up. If I turned off the recording function
I would not have any problems. It could be I was taxing my old P166 a bit too
much. Not sure.
