Well, only a masochist (or maybe a sadist, if your call is KH8/N5OLS) does
Sweepstakes CW from American Samoa. It dawned on me some time Saturday that
Sweepstakes was going on, so I figured I would get on and see if anyone could
copy my callsign and exchange. Quite a few actually did, and it was fun
looking for the low-power guys who MIGHT need the Pacific section. It even
began to look like I might work a sweep, so I started looking for new sections
to work, and regretted not spending some time early trying to work the only VE2
I heard, and a couple of the other New England/VE's that vanished. For those
of you who didn't work VY1JA, I'm here to testify that he was on and active, as
I heard him almost every time I tuned around the entire contest. That made it
all the more surprising that I only heard, and worked a single KL7 -- Dan, or
whomever was op'ing KL7Y. In the end I connected to the net and made myself
UNLIMITED by looking for spots on OH2AQ for the missing sections, but it was
wasted effort.

Several of the sections were really scarce this year, even areas that I should
have been able to work easily. Nice to hear all the activity out of KP2 and
KP4, and that new WTF section... I hadn't read about it, living in isolation
in the middle of the ocean, so WTF was what I was thinking the first time I
heard it.

I only had one station that insisted I was DX this year, compared to the
typical four or five. Late in the contest I had a 5-lander respond to my call
with "KH8/N5..CQ SS DE N5##" and never would answer my calls again. He was
599+20, and I was running about as much as the Alpha would put out, so I can
only figure that he was the second one who thought I wasn't in a W/VE section.
Either that or the call was too long to screw with, in which case I really
couldn't argue with the reasoning.

Congratulations to all on the nice efforts. Cheers from the Distant Pacific
section, as far from Hawaii as Maine is from California...
