Radiosport Hawaiian style proved to be a blast! Unfortunately I had to work on
Friday (darn it, work always seems to get in the way of enjoying radio). The
contest begins at 2 PM local Hawaiian time so prime operating time was lost. I
didn't get home from work until 6PM and figured 10 meters was a bust by then.
I showed up at my hosts' shack at 8AM Saturday (1800UTC) and we were off and
running with almost half the contest behind us. WH7K and KH7V operated SSB and
I had the CW duty. The pileups were ferocious at times :>). We could only run
about 400 watts because of local RFI complaints from the neighbors who insisted
on watching the wasteland of TV. We quit operation about 6 PM local time and
settled into Korean BBQ & Subway sandwiches. I returned on Sunday at about 8AM
to a shack all to myself. Sandy and Don were providing local communications
support for the Hawaiian marathon in Waikiki. The last 6 hours of the contest
were fast and furious on both CW and SSB. My apologies to those who I missed
and I hope you picked up the HI multiplier with one of the other active
stations that I heard on including KH6ND, KH6BZF, and AH6HY. Special thanks to
K4MA for cooperating with a QSY when we started butting heads. I moved down a
bit and he moved up a bit and all was well in paradise. Otherwise, there was
little controversy at this end. Murphy luckily failed to show up. The CT
software that Don had recently ordered performed well except for the lack of
displaying the multiplier list (not a problem for me). Many stations asked if I
was on Kure Island; apparently the software makes no provision for entering
Hawaii as KH7/NH7/AH7/WH7. Hopefully, this will or has been addressed by the
software authors as there are many KH7 stations here including the very active
(previously) KH7R. The A4S at 30 feet played well to stateside and JA. Never
heard europe, so missed a bunch of multipliers. I will try to interest Don and
Sandy in RTTY operation and get their station set up for ARRL RTTY Roundup.
See you all back on the mainland in mid January. I may be back on Oahu later
next year for more work (ugh) and more contesting (yea!).
