I had a blast - my first semi-serious contest from home since maybe the 1999
edition. I didn't set any goals, so I exceeded them! I thought 500 QSOs/50K
would be nice (I had <400/<40K that year), then when I went over 600 QSOs with
lots of time left I decided 700 was doable.
I went to bed Saturday night with 46 states in the log. That would be it - I
never heard Delaware, but did hear W0KFG/QRP in ND working someone on 15
towards the end, but couldn't attract his attention. I heard a half dozen more
countries that I did not work including JA (doh!), CO and SV5. Did work A52YL
Sunday morning - that was nice!
I called CQ a LOT more than I have in previous RTTY contests. By Sunday
afternoon, my QSO total on 20 was still way down (like, 100 QSOs less than 10
or 15), so I forced myself to call CQ and grind out QSOs until it hurt, and did
reasonably well. Had a nice run on 40 at the end. My rate actually went UP as
the contest wore on.
AA5AU's SO3R operation was quite effective - twice he found me calling CQ after
I had only been on the band a couple of minutes. Congrats, Don!
Condx on 80 meters to EU were quite good - I never had to call guys more than a
couple of times, and some came back to my CQs.
My soapbox moment was finding W7WK calling/working guys on 15 Saturday
afternoon. I knew my father W1JR needed MT as one of his last states. So I
went up a couple of KHz and blindly called him, and he came back! Then I asked
him to stand by while I called my Dad on the phone to get him on frequency.
They had no problem making the QSO.
See everyone in the WPX in a month!
