SOAPBOX: I hope that I didn't cause too much confusion. I operated
this contest first on the French side of the island on the 17th (UTC),
then on the Dutch side of the island on the 18th as we had a hotel
change in the middle of the weekend.
I worked many of you from both FS and PJ7.
The setup on the French side was an Icom 706MKIIG, an MFJ Switching
Power Supply and an LDG AT-11MP Autotuner. The antenna was a Fiberglas
Teleskop Loop (by Walter Spieth - DK9SQ) generously loaned to me by
W8EB. This antenna did a super job with the tuner and set up in about
10 minutes. I had it mounted on a second story balcony of a two story
building. Only 30 feet of RG8X mini-foam coax was needed to reach the
operating position. Knowing that there would be limited time on each
side of the island, I concentrated on 10/15/20 meters. Pictures will be
added to my website at:
http://www.qsl.net/nd5s/index.html
I operated from Grand Case which is an old section on the French side
noted for their fine restaurants.
The voltage fluctuated quite a bit at the hotel and caused eratic
behavior in both the computer and the rig, thus the sometimes lapse
of time coming back to you. The voltage meter on my power supply,
normally rock steady, would swing wildly with the RF. My sigs were
very raspy until I figured out that lowering the power level would
improve my signal. I operated most of the contest here at between
10 and 30 watts. More info on my summary from the Dutch side.
Thanks for all the Qs, and despite visits from Murphy, I had a ball
handing out multipliers from two locations.
