Part time effort - I guess. I was 100% serious, trying to give KQ2M some
friendly competition for my first stateside WPX after my 2.5 years in Guam.
Sunday morning my wife called and said she was in the hospital, our 5 year old
son passed out in the house with a 105 fever. Needless to say, I dropped
everything immedietely and rushed home with 7 hours of operating time left.
Although he was ill all day Saturday, we figured it was one of those 24 hour
bugs kids always catch. It turns out he has pnemonia. He'll be ok, but he's
going to have to spend a couple days at the hospital until his fever drops (it
was still spiking to 104 last night).
The contest was a BLAST. I averaged 100/hr for the entire operating time,
and I am finally getting proficient at SO2R. One interresting note, I was
having a great EU run on 10m Sunday until I quit. Although the 36 element
stack was best for xmit, I was using a 3el tribander at 48ft for RX. I was
hearing stuff on that antenna I couldn't hear on the stack.
The only thing I would have changed was my off time. I had 6 hours off in
the first 24 hours. Next time I think I'll take about half that for the first
day. Although KQ2M and KI1G were about 150 qso's ahead of me early Sunday, I
had already taken all but one of the required 12 hours off and I think my final
score would have been competitive to theirs. I'm not sure what their final
score was, but I would have been looking at about 8.5 meg.
Thanks a million to K4XS. He made his station available to me although he
was out of town for the weekend. Congrats to everyone for the big scores; I'll
defenitely be back next year for one of my favorite contests.

73, Dave N2NL
