I was in the Portland, OR area on business the week before WPX
(Verisity Specman training given by Qualis Design), so about a month
ago toyed with the idea of joining a M/M in the area for WPX. Seems
NK7U is in CA now, and W7RM doesn't do WPX, so got a lead from Bill,
W4AN and was invited to The Tree House in Boring, OR (otherwise known
as N6TR) to hang out before my flight on Sunday a.m. As it turned
out, Tree was trying to get ready for the June VHF QSO party in a
couple of weeks, so my being there prevented him from getting
distracted by the LF bands.
Just a few comments:
1. I have never operated from outside W1 before.
2. I have never used TR log software before.
3. The Wx sure was nice, was hard to plan to spend the
weekend inside instead of exploring the mountains/coast etc.
In fact on Tuesday they broke a temperature record in Portland.
90 degrees F! I never saw clouds the whole time I was there.
Anyway, I didn't get to his place until about 0130z, and my first QSO
was at 0155Z on 15m where I stayed for about 2 hours working mostly JA
(and even some Europe) with stateside calling in frequently. At
0400z, scooted down to 40m to see if I could hear any EU and worked
DL1IAO, EA5FID, DK3GI, F6BEE, OM7JB, S57DX and OM7M. ZS6QU called in
with a great signal. Not great rate, but it was fun to see what I
could work. Then moved to 20m at 0500z to run EU until 0719z when I
took a couple of hours of sleep. At 0904z started working JA on 40m,
went to 80m at 0948z, heard a few JAs calling W1YY/7, worked HC8N then
back to 40m until 1035z when I moved to 20m to work a few more JAs
before calling it quits at 1042z for more sleep.
Got up at 1430z and resumed running Asia on 20m until going to 15m at
1615z. Worked a few of the loud Europeans, then found a frequency and
started CQing. 15m was literally a bottomless pit of Europeans all
afternoon, something I never expected from the West Coast. The rate
was never great, but it was steady. Just when things would dry up for
a few minutes, they'd all be back.
At 2027z went to 10m to pick up some of the South Americans on 10m -
Tree has only one beam on 10m and it's fixed to W4, so didn't spend a
lot of time there. The South Americans were still running EU, and I
even heard a weak F2YT calling someone.
After about 1/2 hour on 10m, went back to 15m at 2112z and stayed
there until 01z. Ran with 2 beams, one pointed at JA and the other at
EU. One of Tree's towers is empty, and 15m is the only band with
multiple antennas right now. Last EU in the log is RA3UAG at 0057z -
amazing! Ran on 10m until 0233z then took a break for dinner and a
shower (probably should have done it in the other order though :-).
At 0349z back to 15m, running JAs and other Asians, with the
occasional EU calling in (still!). OG3M/0 was strong at 0406z.
Finally found HC8N at 0408z for my last band 80-10.
At 0421z back to running on 20m, then 40m at 0442z, nothing from EU
(too late?) but worked a very strong EA9AZ at 0447z. Worked 3V8BB one
call 100w at 0500z on 20m, then ran some more 20m until 0605z when I
decided to sleep some more after almost falling asleep at the rig more
than once. At 0915z was back up running on 40m working JAs and other
stuff. Went to 80m at 1005z to run some JAs, had RA0FF call in which
I know is no big deal for you left coast guys, but it gave me a
thrill. UA0IA/0 was loud on 80m as well. Back to 20m at 1043z for a
few minutes, then resumed running on 40m at 1100z. The JAs were not
high rate but steady and mostly LOUD. B5TX was an easy call at 1139z
(try *that* from 1-land!).
Checked 80m at 1212z but nothing except stateside, so went back to 40
until 1300z, then ran 20m for the next half hour. My last QSO was at
1331z and then I packed up and was on the road to the airport by
1345z.
I had hoped to back home by 00z to dump my score into the 3830 net,
but we went out in search of a Boston Globe, as ours had been soaked
from sitting outside in the rain all day, so didn't get home until
0030z and didn't feel like going downstairs.
TR took some getting used to, but it has a lot of nice features for
minizing the amount of work you need to do to log a contact. I can
see where this would be very helpful in a SO2R situation. I apologize
to the people whose exchange I flubbed up one or more times.
Thanks to Tree and his family for the hospitality -- they are great
hosts, and the pets seemed to like me (as did the horses, but probably
because I bribed them with carrots). Thanks to Tree for the use of
the Boring ARC club station and callsign.
