At the last minute, I decided to go low power, what with the high bands being
so good, I figured I could still have fun and make the top ten, which I didn't
think I could do high power, even though I'd probably make 300 - 400 more QSOs.
I believe it turned out to be the right decision.
I came out of the shoot with the last 10 rate meter at 210 and wound up with an
all-time best hour of 128. I felt like the King of 10 meters.
But ... when things slowed down and I went to use the 2nd radio, it wouldn't
load on any band. VERY frustrating. It was working the night before when I
checked out the station. I figured it was the Bandpass filter box, so I ran in
the closet and bypassed it, which solved the problem. After the contest, I
found I had turned off the power switch on my customized Band Decoders by
accident. Ouch.
In my sweep search, I heard VY1MB on 10 meters. Just as I was about to give him
a call, he went QRT because of an unruly pile-up. I heard him later S&Ping and
called CQ up the band to no avail. I heard someone working VY1AO? who was
S&Ping high on 10 Sunday morning, but couldn't get him. I heard someone working
a VE8, but couldn't hear the VE8. So about 20:00 I changed my CQ message to
include looking for VY1/VE8 and about 40 minutes later VY1MB came by for the
sweep.
Another highlight occured with about 2 hours to go. I was looking for a
frequency on a very crowded 20 meter band when I heard a station ragchewing on
14240 say 73. I asked the guy he was working if he was done with the frequency
and he let me have it. I got in a great run for about 45 minutes before I got
squeezed out by the QRO guys.
