de K8CC:
This was an effort by three MRRCers and a friend, none of whom had ever done
phone SS from a big station before. The OM (that's me) was busy over the
weekend refurbishing and installing a 5L for CQWW CW next weekend so the team
for the most part had to learn the moves on their own.
The first half went pretty well as the boys had 897 QSOs in the log when they
went to bed at 0828Z. The second half proved to be more of a challenge (no
surprise here) as they had to learn where to find QSOs. There were some
surprising runs, like 15M on Sunday AM. However, as most W8s know in SS
"there's no meters like fourty meters" which accounted for 60% of the QSOs.
It's fun (but often frustrating) to watch first timers run a big station as
they cast about for the right thing to do. However, by the end of the contest
all four of the ops were showing huge improvements in their operating skills.
Training mission: Accomplished!
