Comments:
I had my personal best hour in this year's SS Phone: 174 in the first hour.
What a gas! I tape recorded part of that hour, and when I played it back at the
end of the contest, I have to admit that I sounded like some crazed madman.
Sheesh, I didn't know I could talk that fast. The long spaces in between QSOs
on the tape sounded like a faster rate could easily be achieved, by the way.
Thanks to Ken Keeler, N6RO, for letting me use his fine station. PG&E had
*finally* replaced the aging insulators on all the poles around Ken's 10-acre
grape/steel-tower farm and for the first time in maybe 15 years the line noise
was zilch. Much, much improved over most of my career operating at 'RO acres.
For reference, Ken's antennas consist of:
5/5/6 on 10 meters at 100/70/40 feet
6/6/5 on 15 meters at 130/85/50 feet
5/5/5 on 20 meters at 130/90/45 feet
4/4 on 40 meters at 130/70 feet
2-ele Quad on 80 meters at 120'
Even with the big antennas on 40 and 80 meters, I couldn't get much going
there, but thank goodness for the higher bands! I exercized the tuning knobs on
both radios all throughout the contest, especially after hearing N6IG and
K6KM's numbers during the 'test. They provided great inspiration for keeping me
going. Thanks, guys.
Final numbers: 1829/80 = 292,640 for the NCCC.
