Comments:

Alex, LZ4AX, an op from LZ9W, is now at Penn State finishing up his Ph.D. He
has been very interested in the K3CR contest station and I asked him if he
wanted to operate for CQWW CW. He jumped at the chance and this was his first
time doing anything single op seriously and also the first time to operate from
stateside. It was also his first time to ever use two radios. He was super
enthusiastic and this was great to see.

The station here has suffered with two major lightning hits this past summer
and lots of things that had to be fixed (rotators, rotator pots, broken rotator
gears, all three stack boxes fried, etc.) It has put us really behind in our
plans to get this a fully automated two radio station. We were able to piece
together a lot of things for Alex to use, however, there also was still a lot
that could not be fixed in time. Hopefully, we can keep working on this and
get the station in better shape for next time. Having a major lightning hit in
Puerto Rico at my other station at WP3R didn't help matters.

Alex had a great time and looks like a good operator to learn the ropes for the
next few years here. The only thing that broke too at the end of the contest
was the lower TIC ring for 20M. We are hoping that something went bad in the
control box or in the pot. All the other stuff held together and worked
flawlessly.

Here was what Alex had to work with:

Two FT1000MP's with all filters.
NA 10.53 and NA box for two radios.
Alpha 87A and Ameritron AL1200.

Antennas:

1600 ft Beverage to Europe (Alex really liked this one!!!)
1600 ft Beverage to NW
1000 ft Beverage to West
400 ft Beverage to SE

160M - Offset 450 ohm fed dipole at 170 ft between 10 and 20M towers.
80M - NE/SW dipole at 170 ft between 20 and 15M towers.
    - SE/NW inverted-V at 100 ft on Log Periodics tower.
40M - NE 2 by 2 dipole curtain array with top pair at 170 ft between 20
      and 15M towers.
    - 3 el V Yagi that is rotatable and switchable on a 60 ft tower.
    - Low inverted-V at 50 ft on 10M tower.
20M - 6 over 6 over 6 OWA Yagis with control box to select all 7 combinations.
Top is at 180 ft and each has 48 ft boom.
15M - 6 over 6 over 6 OWA Yagis with control box to select all 7 combinations.
Top is at 190 ft and each has 48 ft boom.
10M - 7 over 7 over 7 over 7 with control box to select each one individually,
or all 4 or the bottom 3 fixed to Europe.
20M, 15M, 10M - 10 to 30 MHz Log Periodics at 100 ft and at 35 ft.

My thanks to Alex for operating and doing a great job!!

73,

Jim Breakall, WA3FET
