Comments:
Unless someone turns in a higher score this should set a new W7 record for M/2.
(And actually the old M/2 record in 1992 was from the NK7U station but under
NI7T?s call. Our goal this year was to bring the record back under Joe?s call.)
In fact it may even beat the existing M/M W7 record score that NK7U turned in
back in 1993. Looking at some of the early postings we may even break into the
rarefied air of the US Top 10. We manage that every now and then as a M/S in
CQWW SSB, usually as the only station west of the Mississippi, not including
Texas, to do so. In ARRL with the smaller Multi?s spread across M/S and M/2 it
is a bit easier.
Looking at some of the M/2 scores posted you can see that as usual big
difference in the multipliers. In terms of QSO?s we can just about hang in there
with our natural advantage to Japan. But, we always get creamed in terms of
mults.

As many people have already said conditions were wonderful this year at least on
the high bands. In the past few years it always seems like we can get great
conditions on one of the two days but not both. This year we got both! My
favorite story occurred Saturday night when NK7U and I were doing the night
shift. About 2:45AM local I sat down at one of the stations and found 15M packed
with signals! I quickly changed my plan of running JA?s on 40M which is a pure
grind the second night and started running Europeans and Asians on 15M. I did
have one glitch in that I made one of those usual late night mistakes and
somehow shut down the PC I was using. By the time I recovered of course I had
lost my run frequency and had a hard time finding another one. None of the
contest regulars at NK7U could ever remember 15M being open that late at night,
or is it early in the morning. Anyway we pretty much stayed on 15M from that
point until the end of the contest.
The low bands on the other hand seemed to suffer both from propagation and from
lack of activity ? also noted by ON4UN. I think this is the lowest 80 and 160M
totals I can remember.
I got a kick out of seeing DL4YAO posting on signal reports from Germany. It is
always fun to know how your signal stacks up with the competition. I wish others
would do the same thing and I need to take a few minutes and jot some of these
reports down in future contests. Christoph noted us for having a big signal on
15M. Joe has a 6/6/6/6 stack on Europe so that must be doing a good job. On 10M
we never really got the 4 stack up and all we have is the lower 6/6 out of the
planned 6/6/6/6. We know it does well in its own right, but we must have been in
the masses and did not get called out for a noticeable signal.
By the way the antennas at NK7U now are:
160M: elevated ground plane
80M: 3 element beam at 180?
40M: 4/4 stack at 90 and 180? (though the bottom one is out of commission right
now)
20M: 5/5/5/5 stack on EU top one about 180? and a rotating 6/6 and 60 and 120?
15M: 6/6/6/6 stack on EU, a 4/4/4/4 stack on JA, and 6/6 rotating at 45 and
90?
10M: 6/6 stack on EU, 5/5/5/5 stack on JA, and a rotating 7/7 at 30 and 70?
The bummer for the weekend that certainly knocked down our score from the
probably the mid 5 Million range was the line noise and other locally generated
QRM which on all bands was S3-5 all weekend. This caused many lengthy repeats to
get calls and completely covered up many weak ones ? in particular the 100W and
a dipole crowd from Europe. Also note our 10M QSO total to Asia was below our
15M total whereas the reverse was true to Europe. When 10M is open we always
work more JA?s on 10M than 15M but this year it was about 100 less. This year we
also had significant noise on 10M to JA we had never had before. So, if you are
one of those stations we just could not pull out of the noise now you know why.
Because of the noise we also got off to a real slow start. Barely breaking 100
total QSO?s in the M/2 category the first hour in a contest with bands wide open
is a bad omen. But, I guess our brain filtering finally got settled in and we
started making headway. But still we only had three hours that exceeded 100/hour
on any single band and our highest total hour was only a 162. This score was one
we really had to work for.
This noise seems to grow about an S unit a year and is really becoming an
impediment to high scores and a drain on operator patience. Joe is going to
solve this problem by moving his station up to his new home above Baker City in
the hills. All the utilities are buried, it is well away from the power lines,
and initial listening shows it to be a very quiet location. We have a busy
summer of work ahead and hopefully we will have enough up for CQWW in the fall.
See you then.
Thanks everyone for the QSO?s and spots.
Scott/K7ZO and one of the NK7U crowd.
Also, as a final note was it me or did K9PG at ZF2MM have everyone and his uncle
posting spots for him all weekend? Seemed a bit suspicious?
