Comments:
WPX is one of my favorite contests, as one can work everyone for some sort of
credit, and it?s fun to watch the multipliers roll in. Since mults are not
band-sensitive, WPX lacks the drama of a real DX band-multiplier contest, and
there are few to any no "moves" other than simply gaining another QSO. This
makes it easier for DX as they aren?t moved all over the bands. The summer
propagation is interesting as 20 is the over night run band, and this year, with
10 on the wane, 15 was the daytime run band. The 36 hour limit for single ops
is a wonderful rule (IMHO) as it gives one a little rest time, and adds the
strategy element as to what hours to take off. Also, at age 60, I feel like it
evens out the playing field a bit so I can use experience to compensate against
the (mostly) younger people who go the entire 48 hours. Personally I think the
48 hour rule in a contest is brutal, and it removes all strategy except for
brute force and will. While not unimportant, staying awake for that long
reduces people to shells for days afterward.
Unfortunately, 40 meters was a problem for us in W5 as it was virtually
impossible to run Europe on 40, and there was little JA activity to spice up the
normally excellent early morning JA run. Therefore the East Coast gets both
Europe in the day and Europe for twice the points on 40 meters over night, and
we poor Southwest types get no Japan to compensate. Unfortunately there was
almost no JA run on 15 meters either evening.
Complicating matters further was a bruising electrical storm right from 07-09Z
the second night. I had to disconnect the station entirely, and prior to that,
the high electron density in the air made it impossible to hear anything on the
20 meter stack, so I did what I could with beverages for the 20 meter operation
before the storm really hit.
Having said all that doom and gloom, the 15 meter openings to Europe were great.
I set a personal best on CW Sunday morning with a four hour stretch of 420 QSOs
starting at 13Z topped with a 120 hour at 14Z. I remember some advice from K5GN
and others and settled in on 21008.5 and got as nice spot. There were a number
of challengers, but they all departed eventually except S53EO who plopped down
and stayed. We both finally managed to nudge up and down a bit and somehow got
things to work out.
I worked the SO2R thing hard most of the time, and continue to marvel at people
who can maintain their accuracy and concentration processing two audio streams
for hours on end in rough QRM conditions. I felt that after two days at it, I
was getting pretty good, but know this is a tough skill to develop.
Thanks to John, NT5C, for the use of his well known DX SSBer call. It was nice
to be a "real" five for a change.
